Labor Day Cruise

Commodores Log

Congratulations to Sharon Stephenson and her amazing group of NSA, ODC, and SCOO volunteers who helped make the 15th Annual Dingy Poker Run another great success. This year the proceeds will go to the Pamlico Coastal Activity Council to provide financial assistance for children to attend Sailing Classes. Sailing school for a child is not just about a single summer experience but in some instances a life-changing event. Through sailing classes, children learn to appreciate the environment and gain confidence in themselves. Thank you to Sharon and all the volunteers for making this incredible event happen.

Tracy and Robert’s enthusiasm and organizational skills were exceptional as they planned the Dowry Creek Cruise. It was fun just reading her announcements of what to bring with you on the trip and how to prepare for all the games, the grilling, and the celebrating of birthdays. Kevin and I had planned to attend and were looking forward to bringing our teenage granddaughter and her friend from New Jersey. When the girls arrived and we explained our plans to them their reaction was not what we expected. A trip to Dowry Creek with the possibility of a thunderstorm was not something either of the girls felt comfortable doing.

Plans were changed and we called Tracy to cancel the trip. Reminder to members – when you sign up for an event and something comes up please contact the cruise captain to cancel.

The South River Lazy Days Cruise is coming up August 5th-7th. South River is a beautiful place to drop anchor and enjoy the scenery. This is another event that conflicts with a family reunion in Ocracoke for us. We have children and grandchildren coming from Rhode Island and Raleigh for our annual beach trip.

We will be looking forward to the Cape Look Out Cruise on Labor Day. It will be great to finally be back with all our NSA friends!

Plans for the Commodore’s Ball have been finalized and registration opens on August 1st. The Ball will be held at Stanly Hall. The price to attend has slightly increased to cover the rising costs of the venue, the food, and an open bar offering beer, wine, and liquor. Please register early so we know how many people plan to attend and we can make adjustments if needed.

I hope all our members are being very careful and cautious during this heat wave. Being out on the water is very important to all of us but let’s be mindful of our health and our ability to tolerate this extreme heat. August is the time of the year that being lazy is actually a healthy thing to do and that’s why it’s called the “Lazy Days of Summer. – Stay Safe and see you in September!

2022 Dinghy Poker Run – July 23

The 15th Annual Dinghy Poker Run

The NCO sponsored Dinghy Poker Run was on Saturday, July 23rd, at the Oriental Marina & Inn and in Smith, Kershaw and Green Creeks. It was hot, but we did not have any rain storms or high winds. The purpose of the Dinghy Poker Run is to have fun and raise money for a local charity.

This year’s event accomplished both. Pamlico Coastal Activities Council is once again the recipient of the proceeds. Our donation will be earmarked to provide scholarship money for underprivileged Pamlico County kids referred by HeartWorks or Pamlico Partnership for Children to go to sailing camp.

We had a very successful day! We sold about 200 poker hands. Six docks scattered along the creeks as well as an anchored pontoon boat tiki bar, served as the stops for those collecting their poker hands by some type of water vessel. Dock dealers reported that numerous boats were participating.  Jello shots, water guns and hoses were all part of the process. Land dealers were also available for those who wanted to try their luck at drawing a winning poker hand, but did not have   water access.

The top 13 hands received prizes – items or gift certificates which had been donated by  local businesses or individuals. There were lots of wonderful silent and live auction items which had been donated by a multitude of people and businesses, and lots of folks actively participated in the auctions. There was also a 50/50 raffle. A lunch of sandwiches, potato salad, chips and cookies was part of the purchase of a poker hand. This year’s donation for sailing camp scholarships will be ........... $6,107!!!

I want to give a huge thanks to all the people from NSA, ODC and SCOO, as well as some town folks not in any of the sailing clubs, who helped make this event possible. There were a lot of jobs done the day of the event as well as the preparation beforehand – all handled beautifully by volunteers. I also want to thank all those folks and businesses who donated items, gift certificates and adventures for the auctions and prizes. The event would not be possible if not for the input of many.

Cruising Update

Hello,  Captains!

Our next cruise is Labor day weekend, September 2-5, when we head to Lookout! Check out 2022 LABOR DAY CRUISE.

Below  are recounts some of the fun from our recent sails, Lazy Days and Dog Days Cruise.

The Lazy Days cruise to South River

Since all the attending boats got off to a late start and arrived mid-afternoon, we decided that a raft up instead of anchoring separately would work nicely.

Dulcinea hosted the social with here-beers, Knot Shore hosted game-night and the pot-luck breakfast. We feel bad that all the other boats had to cancel, and we hope all the other sailors are doing well.

This cruise with four participants proved to us, that although the cruises with many participants can be a lot of fun, so can the small cruises.

The Dog Days cruise to Dowry Creek was great fun for those who were able to make it. Some boats left early and stayed nearby, others braved the rainstorms and calm winds on Friday and still others waited till Saturday, and some decided to come by car. All in all, we had 10 boats and 6 people by car. Dowry Creek Marina was very helpful and accommodating!

Saturday was a perfect pool day with one short storm to cool things down a bit. Thanks to everyone for participating in the fun and games as well as providing great sides and desserts for the cookout. A special thank you goes to Tammy and Todd Richards for sharing Todd's 60th birthday celebration with us all! We wound down the weekend with some good wind for sailing on the way home. I think it's safe to say that a good time was had by all!

A friendly reminder to please contact the cruise captains, if you sign up for a cruise and decide not to go. Provisions are gathered based on those who signed up, and the marina holds slips for us. In addition, we like to keep track of who's on the water in case there's a problem.

See you on the water!

Welcome Our New Members

We had a good turnout of some of our newer NSA members for both the Dog Days Cruise to Dowry Creek and the Dinghy Poker Run – it’s great to see our new members jumping right in!

In the past month, we have added the following new members to the club: Darla Bolon and Mark James of Minnesott Beach, owners of S/V Paya Breeze, which they will keep at Pecan Grove Marina (they are in the process of moving it from the Great Lakes); Suzanne (Charli) Daniell of Merritt, owner of S/V Summer Wind which she keeps at a home dock; and Walter Miller of Fayetteville, owner of S/V In Decent Sea, which he keeps at Dowry Creek Marina (where he met many NSA members during the Dog Days Cruise).

Be sure to say hello to our new members when you meet them! And if you have friends or neighbors who might enjoy the NSA, point them to the website or have them give me a call at 336.403.6534.

See you on the water soon!
