Commodore's Log What a great time of year this is; mild days, cool breezes, and all kinds of things to do.
Sharon and I are also jamming our oldest daughter's wedding in there somewhere. All this fun; I may have to take the holidays off to recover :) Be safe out there everyone; we're not the only ones out there running around on all of these Holiday and per-holiday activities. I hope to see you all at the Commodore's Ball! Cruising Update
Fall Cruise - West Bay September 28-29
We were very fortunate to have made it to the shores of the elusive West Bay this year.. It was as lovely as the tales describe.
Windy, rainy weather kept us away on Friday, but Saturday was a perfect day to sail to the bay with a nice wind out of the southwest. That allowed us to anchor outside the bay, near the beautiful sandy beach.
We had about 15 boats carrying 32 people and two dogs. It was nice to meet some new members and guests.
The potluck was terrific, with lots of good food. The dogs, Whistler and Burrito, enjoyed all the friendly people and their leftover bits of steak and fish. At sunset, the bright orange sky captured everyone's attention. And thanks to the folks who brought firewood, we had a roaring campfire after the sun went down.
Overall, it was a perfect mini-cruise. Many thanks to everyone who participated and made this a fun event. West Bay is a place we'll be returning to.

Next Cruise - Halloween Cruise
Get your costumes ready and join us in Beaufort for the Halloween Cruise! We'll gather, in costume, at the docks at 4:00 for an early happy hour, drinking any/all leftover drinks from the season and enjoying traveling snacks amongst participating boats.
We'll then move to a local bar where participants will be provided with 2 drink tickets. Which bar will be determined based on registration numbers and availability.
It's recommended that you call Beaufort Docks early if you plan to attend as this is a popular weekend.

It was wonderful to see so many of you on the fall cruise. Our cruise captains arranged for perfect weather, great friends, and warm sand for our toes. It’s hard to believe that the season is ending soon.
I hope to see you all at the Halloween cruise events in Beaufort and at the Commodore’s ball!

Ok, so you made it to the bottom! ... here is your prize nautical trivia:
Definition: an unregulated fund often used for illicit purposes
In nautical jargon, slush is the grease rendered from the salted meat cooked on board a ship. This slush was once commonly skimmed and put into barrels to be sold in port. The money received from sales was put into a "slush fund" and used to purchase luxuries for the crew that they otherwise could not afford. In the late 19th century, the term slush fund was appropriated for monies set aside for political ends. Such slush funds were used to supplement the salaries of government employees, to bribe public officials, or to manage corruptive propaganda on behalf of special interests.
