Commodore's Log Six Weeks Until Spring?!? Well, the snow has come, and the snow has gone, but Punxsutawney Phil says there’s still 6 weeks of winter left. But hey we’ve already had a few days in the 70’s since the snow, so what does a groundhog know about the weather? As you receive this Neuse Juice, the first event of the year will be upon us. I hope you will be able to join the Oyster Roast being held at Sea Harbour this year. It’s always a good time to enjoy the fantastic food members bring and begin making cruising plans with friends new and old for the upcoming season. Speaking of Cruises, we have some interesting places planned this year, and a few new ideas like 2 Spring Cruises and 2 Fall Cruises while dropping the Dog Days cruise considering how hot it is. Krista and Dave have developed a great plan, and we have cruise captains for all but one event. Yeah! Hopefully by the time this newsletter reaches you that one will be filled. If not, please consider stepping up! Hopefully you’ve seen the early request for Memorial Day slips at the Anchorage Marina, and that with the sale of the Marina and Inn the docks have been reconfigured with more smaller slips (one per condo unit). Never fear though, Hunter is still there and will do his utmost to get as many slips for NSA as he can. Another place to be aware of is Alligator River Marina. The DOT has begun construction of the new 65’ high bridge, and the marina is closed for the next 5 years. Sharpen up your anchoring skills! I would also like to remind you about a few off-the-water events happening in the coming weeks and months. The Seminar Series is in full swing, running throughout February and into early March and the Oriental Boat Show is right around the corner April 11-13. These chairs seem to be yearning for Spring and to see boats upon the Neuse. I’m with them! Looking forward to seeing you out there… Jeff Kenyon NSA Commodore Membership Set Sail for Spring: Renew Your Membership Today! Cruising There was a cruise captains meeting last Saturday, We have an exciting year planned, so mark your calendars; our first cruise is April 5-6 to Bishop's Marina. It is a short, shakedown cruise to get the season started. Cruise captains, Cara and Jason Keys, will post the details. There will be a few slips available or you can anchor right nearby. This year we are going to try communicating via WhatsApp on the cruises. It is easier to add and remove group members than regular texting. Please consider downloading WhatsApp if you don’t have it yet. We look forward to seeing you out on the water! Click here for the full list of Cruises! We hope you will join us for as many cruises as you can. And as always, we look forward to seeing you on the water. David and Christa Vice Commodore of Cruising S/V Cymbeline Special Events Greetings sailors, I hope everyone is as excited as I am for our upcoming Spring events. With the Oyster Roast last weekend, and the Salty Spring Social (hang in there, I’m going to explain), we have a lot going on. First, the name change. Everything about the event is basically the same, except that we are not cooking shrimp. It's going to be advertised to the public as a sailing mixer, with food and live entertainment. Alysa Mike will be performing, and if you don't remember her from a couple of years ago, you won’t be disappointed. We will still be selling tickets for $10. Members attend for free and receive two drink tickets. We will be replacing the shrimp with something catered or easily prepared (chicken wings, brisket, etc.). I’m going to get creative here. The savings from the shrimp will cover entertainment and purchased food. We will still need help with registration, but not cooking will free up our members to participate in the event. I want as many people as possible to circulate and talk to people. Less work, more fun is my motto. I'm going to ask members to arrive and check-in at one, ( there may be a shrimp snack), so that from 2-4 we’re focusing on guests. We are working on ideas on how to have more engagement with prospective members. I'd appreciate any ideas. I'll send out an email in March with more details. Let’s reach out to anyone you know who may be interested in learning about the NSA. This is a great way to show them who we are! The oyster roast.... Ok, so you made it to the bottom! ... here is your prize nautical trivia:
Definition: an unregulated fund often used for illicit purposes
In nautical jargon, slush is the grease rendered from the salted meat cooked on board a ship. This slush was once commonly skimmed and put into barrels to be sold in port. The money received from sales was put into a "slush fund" and used to purchase luxuries for the crew that they otherwise could not afford. In the late 19th century, the term slush fund was appropriated for monies set aside for political ends. Such slush funds were used to supplement the salaries of government employees, to bribe public officials, or to manage corruptive propaganda on behalf of special interests.
