'The Neuse Juice'

Volume 51 Number 8

Commodore's Lo

Hello All,

It's Friday morning and as I write this and watching the Neuse level drop, I'm wondering if our boat will be sitting in the mud before the day is done and if it is, will it want to lean? Should I do something about it? Will water come in through my bilge pump? Should I close my thru-hulls? Will our cupboards barf their contents onto the floor?

Maybe I'll just go sit on the boat and have a beer, that always seems to make things better.

Debby seemed to honk a deliberate turn to avoid Oriental, as though we were off-limits. Sharon and I still haven’t experienced a real storm and I have mixed feelings about the idea, but overall this made me happy. As she puts us in her rear view mirror I'm breathing easier and hoping we all came out unscathed.

Looking forward it's just a few weeks to the Labor Day Cruise to Cape Lookout; probably my favorite cruise of the year. Unfortunately Sharon and I will miss it this year. Our middle child is getting Married. I suggested she change the date to free up our weekend, but for some reason the suggestion was not well received. Of course I'm kidding, mostly... :)

Anyway, I hope to see you all at the Fall Cruise, providing of course that I can remember how to work the boat. It’s been so long!  :)

Dinghy Poker Run - Wrap-up

The 2024 Dinghy Poker Run sponsored by the Nautical Co-op of Oriental was held Saturday July  27. The morning started off rainy, but ultimately turned into a beautiful not-too-hot day. Some played their poker hands by visiting 7 “docks” (this included one anchored pontoon decked out as a Tiki bar) in Smith, Green & Kershaw creeks. Others played their hands on the Tiki bar deck.

There were lots of items for both the silent & live auctions, as well as prizes for winners of the top 14 hands. Erik Hardtle made his debut as auctioneer, with wife Jean as his assistant, doing a  reat job coaxing folks to raise the bid. Lunch was make-your-own deli sandwich, pickles & chips.

The call for volunteers had been answered, so we had plenty of folks to organize and run the event. A huge thanks to all who helped throughout the day.

Everyone appeared to be having a fun time. And most importantly, our net proceeds totaled $7,894!

Thanks again to all who helped put this together – solicitation & donation of auction items, pre-event organization and help on the big day.

Dowry Creek Marina Cruise

Cruising in August tends to bring surprises and this years Lazy Days Cruise to Dowry Creek was no exception!  Many boats left Friday with some anchoring out along the way and others heading straight to the marina.

It was nice having the Salty Crab Restaurant available for meal, the pool for cooling off and the surrounding marshlands proved to be great for kayak explorations.

We found some changes to the marina policies regarding bringing outside alcohol to the pool area but in true NSA fashion, we adapted accordingly and held the food and drinks portion of the social in the air conditioned clubhouse.  Afterwords, we headed to the pool area for some Olympic Games.  The rain kept many out of the pool but we did have 3 medal winners in the Watermelon Keep--away Event.

Some participants left Sundays and other’s stayed til Monday.  Despite some engine problems on the way home and some heavy qualms, everyone made it home safe and sound…eventually.  A good time was had by all!

The vice commodores of cruising are looking for cruise captains for the Halloween cruise!

If you are interested or have any questions, please contact us at vccruising@neusesailingassociation.org

Ideally, we would like 2 boats to share it. Right now, the schedule says it will be in Beaufort, but if you have another idea, let us know.

New practices started last year that will continue:

  1. Sharing the job of cruise captains between 2 boats. This worked well last year. New cruisers were mentored by seasoned members and there was always a captain in case plans changed! In February, there will be a general meeting of all those interested/willing to participate as cruise captains.
  2. Leave no Trace: BYO cups, plates and utensils to reduce waste at our socials

We look forward to seeing you all out on the water!

Ok, so you made it to the bottom!  ... here is your prize nautical trivia:

Q: Sailing is an Olympic sport. When was the first time it was included on the Olympic program?

A: 1896 Sailing was introduced into the Olympics at the Games held in Athens, Greece in 1896. Although sailing was on the program for that year it could not take place because of weather concerns. Sailing was not included in the 1900 Olympics, but returned to the regular program in 1904.
