Commodore's Log It’s feeling like boating season! Last weeks cruise has me really looking forward to seeing you all out on the water. This month I am very pleased to announce that Cara Keys and Tony Nelson have both accepted appointments to serve on the NSA Bridge as Directors. Cara and Jason have been members of the NSA since they discovered Oriental and brought their 22’ trailer sailor down in 2017. After their first overnight in South River where the weather turned rough overnight, it was decided. “We are gonna need a bigger boat!” Now they sail an Endeavour 32 based out of Pecan Grove. We really love the sense of community and adventure we have found in the club. Everyone has been very helpful, encouraging and quick to lend a hand (or a tow) when needed. We are both still working but “One Day” we will make it to the Bahamas in our own boat. Until then, we enjoy hanging out with all the great friends we have made in the club.
Oh – Cara was VC of Finance for 2 years and Jason was VC of Cruising in case anyone wants to know. Tony is an avid sailor, cyclists, drummer and all around nice guy which on most good days, many can agree with. Being of Jamaican decent, English born and raised in Brooklyn, unlike Jason Bourne, all three of his passports are legal. Tony came to sailing whilst a Boy Scout at camp each summer in upstate NY. Noticing that kayaking and canoeing took continuous effort to keep moving, Tony quickly realized that once you got the sail up, you could grab that beer that was poured into a soda bottle (that didn't end well) and just relax. Early adulting got in the way of sailing till the mid 90's when he would sail his beat up, free to him, Hobie 16 off Emerald Isle in Bogue Sound from time to time. One day he thought about big boat sailing and learned about the Oriental School of Sailing, located in..... Oriental, NC. This immediately brought a question....where the heck is Oriental, NC? Tony came down and took a week long class based on the U.S. Sailing course. From there he chartered from the sailing school, mainly a C&C 26 where he quickly ran aground and scared the living crap out of his young boys. Not to be deterred, he kept at it and soon through word of mouth, secured a part-time job with NOAA validating depth soundings throughout the Neuse River and Pamlico using trial and error. Tony has a Beneteau Oceanis 361 named Hemispheres which is named after his favorite Rush song, dealing with the battle between heart and mind and the balance between them. Tony has been coming to Oriental for almost twenty years now and had relocated permanently to this quaint village, specifically the theater district three years ago. You'll usually find Tony at The Bean most mornings and the brewery solving social issues and world problems. When not in Oriental, he frequents Ocracoke, Beaufort and Cape Lookout as the goto spots with Hemispheres, creating what we all know as "Tony Events". So let's all bow our heads for a moment of silence for the club as we all welcome him aboard as a new director. Greetings Sailors, I’m so happy to be writing this and not asking for volunteers. The Shrimperoo is in the books and thanks to all of you, it was a great success. The weather gave us just enough of a break to enjoy good food and catch up with friends. Once again, the NSA knocked it out of the park with the sides. Our shrimp cooking crew led by Buster Kenny did an amazing job. The serving crew was great and our registration crew went above and beyond with some starting early and staying on late. It’s the people of the NSA that make these events so successful. Now we’re looking forward to a great sailing season. See you all the water! Cheers! Spring Cruise Recap
North Carolina weather can be fickle with one weekend being 78 degrees and then it's 58 degrees the next. With a NW wind ranging from 15 to 20, it was decided the best place to go was Southwest Creek in South River for the first cruise of our season. Seven boats came over on Friday and four more joined on Saturday for the social at 4pm. Shakedown cruises seem to reveal those boat gremlins and they also test your boat knowledge in asking yourselves, "Now how do I do ---- anchoring/tacking/autopiloting/routing ----- again?"
Friday night we had an impromptu social on Island Girl with plenty of music, good company, and a beautiful purple sunset.
Saturday some fished, some explored, and all had a good time at the social. The game of the day was Bottle Bash which was a fun way to break the ice and test your Frisbee throwing skills.
It was surprisingly warm at the beach as we were shielded from the wind and so we unlayered and then layered back up when the sun got low. Thank you for bringing wood which kept us warm all night. There were several members on their first NSA cruise and I hope we didn't scare them off with our fire dancing.
Sunday morning treated us to some dolphin watching with our morning coffee and then a motor sail back to Oriental with the N winds around 5 to 8.
Thank you all for coming and we look forward to our next adventure together.

The annual Shrimperoo was held on March 23rd, at the Oriental Harbor Marina. Fresh shrimp and an array of fantastic side dishes and libations drew in a large crowd. The weather behaved just enough to allow us to stay warm and dry. The event was attended by many members from the public and brought the club several new members.
Please join me in welcoming those that joined us last month!
We look forward to kicking off the sailing season with all of you! We’ll see you on the water!

Ok, so you made it to the bottom! ... here is your prize nautical trivia:
Sailing was introduced into the Olympics at the Games held in Athens, Greece in 1896. Although sailing was on the program for that year it could not take place because of weather concerns. Sailing was not included in the 1900 Olympics, but returned to the regular program in 1904.from: https://www.funtrivia.com/en/Sports/Sailing-5927.html
