'The Neuse Juice'

Volume 53 Number 2

Commodore's Lo

Hi all! I hope 2026 is off to a great start for everyone; or at least a little better start than mine. If you haven’t heard, I broke my left femur while cycling just before the Oyster Roast (second accident ever and over 40 years since the first; may there be 40 more before another one). Although the injury kept me from attending the Roast, Lynn went in my stead and reported that the turnout was great, the food was excellent and that everyone had a good time.

Next up is the Shrimparoo on March 28 at the Oriental Inn and Marina and I plan to see everyone there. Be on the lookout for more details from Vice Commodores Howard and Ros coming soon.

April brings the Oriental Boat Show to town and NSA will have a presence at NCO’s table featuring ODC, SCOO and NSA with members from each club on hand to answer any questions about Oriental’s sailing/boating clubs which Boat Show attendees may have.

We need to have volunteers from the club at the table doing 2 hour shifts during the length of the show. I know I’ll be able to take some shifts by that time, but there will be plenty of slots to fill for everyone who is interested in helping. Signups for the show will not be available until later in Match, but I wanted to get this chance to be involved out there now so you can mark it on your calendars.

I have sat at the table in past shows and enjoyed meeting sailors and cruisers who are interested in joining the clubs. With all three clubs sitting together, we can talk with interested sailors/cruisers and find the best fit for them in one or more of our Oriental clubs.

    Membership Lo

We have another year of fun-filled NSA events and cruises planned for the 2026 calendar, and we’re excited to get out there!

Members enjoyed a great oyster roast kickoff the the 2026 cruising season on February 14. We’re looking forward to our annual membership drive event on March 28 - the Shrimperoo! . Bring your friends and introduce them to our great club!

We have a new member benefit this year. All active NSA members are now eligible to enroll in the West Marine Pro discount program. We regularly see 35-50% on smaller items like parts and accessories, and 10-20% on larger items like chart plotters. It's is a really great thing to have and there is no cost to us for access.

Please email Rob McDonald with the email address you would like to use to sign up: mcdonald-rob@outlook.com

Lost your name tag? You can order a new one through our website for only $5. You can also purchase one in person at the Shrimperoo.

It’s that time of year… please renew your membership if you haven’t done so already! You should have received an email about renewal, but if not you can also just sign into the website to pay your annual dues. THANK YOU for being a member of NSA!!

Help me give a warm welcome to those who recently joined the club:

    • Brad Lamberton of Garner, NC, owner of S/V Sofia, which is kept at Pecan Grove Marina in Oriental
    • Chris & Misty Rackley of Holly Ridge, NC, owners of S/V Misty Seas

    Special Events Lo

    OysterRoast, 2026.

Eighty five people, 72 members and 13 guests, gathered at Sea Harbour on Saturday February 14 for the NSA Oyster Roast.  The Weather Gods smiled on us, and it was a beautiful sunny winter day. The Shriners did a great job of cooking the oysters and everyone brought fantastic food to share.  It was a wonderful way to start the 2026 NSA season and an opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones, as there were several new members in attendance.

Thank you all for coming, and special thanks to the volunteers who helped with set up, registration and clean up. You made a great team!

    Shrimperoo, Saturday March 28, 2026.

Our next social event is the Shrimperoo to be held at the Oriental Inn and Marina on March 28, 2-4pm. This is our annual membership drive so please make sure that you invite anyone who is interested in joining NSA.  The event is free for members and $20 for non-members, however if they join NSA at the Shrimperoo the event cost is taken off their membership fees. Everyone will get food and 2 drinks tickets at the event.

Christopher Siren, jazz pianist, will be providing music for us this year. https://www.facebook.com/groups/243412396396155/posts/2078070726263637/https://www.linkedin.com/in/christopher-siren-a0bbaa2b

We will be looking for volunteers to help at this event and for all club members to bring a side or desert to share. Volunteering opportunities include registration and payment of membership dues, set up, cooking/serving shrimp and clean up.

If you would like to volunteer please let Howard and Ros know (252 515 4850, howardcheetham@gmail.com).  More information will come closer to the event.

In the meantime, please register here: Shrimperoo

    Cruising Lo

Welcome to cruising 2026! It’s going to be a good year! Check out the details on the cruising calendar and mark the dates now! We have a few new treats in store for this year and we hope you’ll join us.

    • April - Spring cruise to Beaufort, NC
    • May - Airshow cruise to Cherry Point
    • May - Memorial Day cruise to Cape Lookout
    • June - Ocrafolk on Ocracoke cruise
    • July - Fourth of July cruise to Cape Lookout (fireworks EVERYWHERE!) followed by a weeklong cruise to points south
    • August - Summer cruise up north (probably Dowry Creek)
    • September - Labor Day cruise to Bath and Washington
    • October - Blackbeard’s Pirate Jamboree / Halloween cruise to Ocracoke

The annual Cruising Captains meeting will be held at 9 AM on March 28th at our house, details to follow. We will go over the basic guidelines and answer any questions. We will try to keep it short so people can help set up for the Shrimperoo.

Speaking of cruise captains, we are still looking for volunteers! We’re looking for leads for the week-long and August cruise, and have space for support roles on most cruises. Let us know if you can help, no experience required! It’s a great opportunity to learn the ropes and get to know people. (Cruise Captain 101)

One change this year is that all cruises will be BYOB. We will maintain a small budget for each cruise for activities/snacks/something chosen by the cruise captain, but after discussion at the Annual Meeting we decided at the last bridge meeting to not provide drinks.  This will make being a cruise captain easier, and allow everyone to bring what they would like to drink to the socials.

    NSA Polar Plunge Team

Congratulations and thank you to the NSA POLAR PLUNGE TEAM for raising $5200 to support Special Olympics of Pamlico County.  Our team raised over half of the $9430 that supports athletic events for the County’s Special Athletes.

Unfortunately we did not have the greatest of weather and the Plunge was cancelled but more importantly NSA supported this charitable event.

Thanks to our Captain Sharon McDonald for organizing the team and to our team members Christa Kreutz, Rick Edwards, Rob McDonald, Tammy/Todd Richards, Rich Mason, Jason Keys, Todd Cox and hopefully I named everyone ( I was part of the team too). Also thanks to the NSA members who donated to this event.

Hope to see more of you in the team next year!! NSA IS A GREAT AND GIVING ORGANIZATION!
