'The Neuse Juice'

Volume 51 Number 9

Commodore's Lo

It's that time of year! Or at least it feel's like it...

The days have been mild and the evenings cool and fresh. I'm thrilled because I love  being on the hook without the constant drone of fans or our tiny generator. There's just nothing better than being rocked to sleep in a quiet bay needing nothing but the cool breeze to guarantee comfort.

Our fall cruise to West Bay is coming up in just a few weeks and I'm hopeful that this cool trend will return and that the winds will be favorable. Cross your fingers everybody!

Sharon and I have missed the last couple of cruises and frankly, I'm feeling the loss. I hope to see you all very soon.

Cruising Update

Fall Cruise - West Bay September 28-29

This might be the magical year to land on the shores of the elusive West Bay. If the stars align and the winds are in our favor, we will set our course ENE. "Hope springs eternal" is the motto for the 2024 Fall Cruise.  Just west of Cedar Island, West Bay is approximately 25 miles of sailing from Oriental. We've heard tales of a beautiful beach, a perfect place for sailors to gather and celebrate the arrival of autumn.  Join us in September as we set our course for this mythical shore.

Labor Day Cruise - Cape Lookout

Check out the NSA Facebook Group Page for more pictures. https://www.facebook.com/groups/54780896511

The Labor Day Cruise was fun, but man was the weather was hot.  Friday, when we arrived our "early-bird" NSA members had already claimed a perfect spot on the beach setting up several shade tents.  Saturday, started with a dinghy tour to the lighthouse led by Glen and Michele to explore the keeper's quarters and store.  The beach scavenger hunt was the next event, but by 11AM it was already so hot few members chose to participate.  Lynn and Steve were the winners taking advantage of getting almost all items and many extra points.  In the heat of the day, which was most of the day, most people took to floating in the water.

Sunday and Monday had differentiating weather predications and some members chose to leave early.  Overnight there were storms over CLO, but they were gone when I woke up.   Most of us that chose to stay until Monday, left around 6AM with a rather uneventful trip home.   We enjoyed planning this trip together and we appreciate everyone's participation.

The vice commodores of cruising are looking for

cruise captains for the

Halloween cruise Oct 26-27!

If you are interested or have any questions, please contact us at vccruising@neusesailingassociation.org

Ideally, we would like 2 boats to share it. Right now, the schedule says it will be in Beaufort, but if you have another idea, let us know.

New practices started last year that will continue:

  1. Sharing the job of cruise captains between 2 boats. This worked well last year. New cruisers were mentored by seasoned members and there was always a captain in case plans changed! In February, there will be a general meeting of all those interested/willing to participate as cruise captains.
  2. Leave no Trace: BYO cups, plates and utensils to reduce waste at our socials

We look forward to seeing you all out on the water!

Please Welcome Our New Members

It was a quiet August for new members, but busy for our fleet with both the Labor Day and Fall Cruise.

It’s hard to believe that the summer is moving by so quickly. Although I was unable to join in these past couple cruises, I have enjoyed seeing the pictures of both new and old members enjoying the water, our beautiful surroundings, and one another’s company.

Please be sure to say hello to our new members when you meet them! If you have friends or neighbors who might enjoy the NSA, point them to the website for more information. It is easy to sign up by clicking the Join Now button on the main page. There are paper applications available for download as well. Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help.

If anyone needs an NSA name tag (or other NSA swag), they can be ordered from the NSA Marketplace on our website. I hope to see you all at the upcoming fall events.

Ok, so you made it to the bottom!  ... here is your prize nautical trivia:

Q: When did the race that started the "Quest for the America's Cup" happen?

A: In its many years of history, the quest for the Cup has undergone many changes from the original race in 1851 to the present day. Not only in the type of boats competing but the people sailing them. Still, it breaks down to a contest between one defender and one challenger, head to head.
