'The Neuse Juice'

Volume 52 Number 6

Commodore's Lo

Summer is finally here…

And so is the heat! It is hard to believe that 4 cruises are now complete, with 5 more on the horizon to complete the 2025 season.  We have had some great times already, and great destinations ahead including Belhaven, Cape Lookout, Bath, West Bay, and we’ll finish up the cruising season with Halloween in Ocracoke. Be sure to sign up on the events page to get in on the fun here.

Pat and I had a nice leisurely cruise to Washington, Belhaven and Ocracoke, hooking up with the Memorial Day cruise.  We were so pleased to see so many boats participate and some really special events on the beach and at the marina. I am hoping that spirit will continue at the upcoming events.

Thinking way ahead, this is a quick notice that the Commodore’s Ball will be held again this year at Stanley Hall in New Bern on November 8.  Keep a lookout for details as they form in the coming couple of months.  As your commodore I hope you are planning to be there to celebrate another great year with NSA!

On the near term calendar is the Dinghy Poker Run om July 26, which is always a great charitable event for youth sailing and swimming in Pamlico County. I hope you can make it.

I wish the fleet fair winds and following seas (does that apply for trawlers?) and hope to see you at the next event!

Membership

May was a fantastic month for NSA! We had a great turnout of both new and longtime members during the cruises to South West Creek and Ocracoke. The camaraderie and fun on the water made for a truly memorable outing—we hope to see even more of you at upcoming events!

It's been a pleasure getting to know some of our newest members over the past few months. If you haven’t had a chance to meet them yet, be sure to say hello and give them a warm NSA welcome.

Need a name tag? They’re a great way to help everyone put names to faces. You can order yours through the online store on our website.

Know someone who might enjoy being part of the NSA community? Encourage them to visit our website to learn more.

See you on the water!

Cruising

The Memorial Day cruise and the Week-long north were great successes! Thank you to Jeff and Pat for leading the Ocracoke cruise. While many had to leave on Sunday because of the weather, the rest of the gang enjoyed a fun social at the traditional location. Thank you to all who joined!

We are trying a new thing this summer: Pop-up cruises, if the weather is nice and you want to go somewhere close by with a group on the weekend, let us know, and we can put an announcement out there.

Our first pop-up cruise is going to be to New Bern, on June 20, anchored by Union Point Park to listen to the Tom Petty cover band, as part of the Footloose on the Neuse Summer concert series.

We hope you will join us for as many cruises as you can. And as always, we look forward to seeing you on the water.

Three Ships a Cruise Doth Make!

Cruise Captains, David and Christa Kreutz

The weather was looking grim after days of sitting in Silver Lake in the rain. But, then, on the 3rd day, the sun came out, around 1 pm! Our brave cruise members decided to go for it and head north.

Walkabout, Lali, and Cymbeline comprised our fleet. We felt like the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria exploring new territory.

We headed north towards Manteo, stopping halfway on the west side of the Sound at Long Shaol River. It was a fine anchorage, with a beautiful sunset (other than the mosquitoes encouraged by all the recent rain).

The next day, we finished the trip to Manteo, docking at the Town Marina. It has a lovely waterfront, with many nice shops and restaurants, and a view of Festival Island that we could walk to. One of our cruise members, Paul Tuilzi, gave us a nice tour of the island because he had spent time there doing PhD research years before. We enjoyed learning more about the area from Paul.

Manteo is a very walkable town. We all enjoyed a free wine tasting, the farmers market on Saturday morning, the Kill Devil Rum distillery, an art gallery, and some good meals. The Mother Vine was an interesting bike trip, a couple of miles north of downtown.  It is the oldest Scuppernong vine in the US. It is estimated to be over 400 years old.

We had our official social on Sunday at the waterfront gazebo, and cruise captain David taught everyone how to tie a flying bowline knot. He made sure everyone mastered it!

After our stay in Manteo was finished, we traveled around the north side of Roanoke Island into Albemarle Sound and eventually down the Alligator River heading back south.

After an overnight anchorage at the head of the Alligator River, we continued through the scenic Alligator / Pungo River canal, watching bald eagles, for a last stop at Dowry Creek Marina before heading home.

Overall, the Manteo cruise was a memorable and fun experience that we would recommend and do again.

Memorial Day Cruise - Ocracoke

We had a great turn out for the Memorial Day Cruise to Ocracoke with approximately 22 boats and about 50 people.  The weather was great on Saturday for a day at the beach on Springer Point.  About 40 people were there enjoying one another's company, having snacks, lunch and beverages.  Some people even got to try out Dave Kreutz' paddle board and did quite well!

We had a little smaller than expected group for the gathering at the pavilion because the weather threats for travel home on Memorial Day caused a number of people to depart on Sunday. However, those who were able to remain had a great time

with beverages, excellent appetizers and snacks, and of course, a wonderful group of NSAers!

We had some new members as well as seasoned members participate, so it was nice to be able to catch up with people we've known for a number of years and make some new friends!
