NSA Seminar Series: Emergency Signaling Devices

  • 5 Aug 2017
  • 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM
  • Oriental Town Hall

This seminar will be conducted in three sessions on the same day:

  • Session 1 – This session will be held at the Oriental Town Hall starting at 9:00 am. It will cover the various emergency signaling devices, their cost, and relative effectiveness. After this session, we will adjourn around noon for lunch.
  • Session 2 – We will meet at the NC Wildlife Boat Ramp after lunch where Jim will demonstrate emergency signaling devices approved for day use. Everyone will have the opportunity to try a number of daylight-rated devices out for practice and to gauge their effectiveness.
  • Session 3 – Session 3 will start at an agreed upon time after dark. There everyone will be able to try out a variety of night-rated devices.

For each outdoor session, we will have a boat stationed further up the creek that will fire the same devices for comparison at a distance.  Attendees to the outdoor sessions are invited to bring any old pyrotechnics that they may have on hand. They are encouraged to bring eye protection and heavy gloves, as well as their own 12 ga. (orange plastic) and 25 mm (white metal) signaling guns.

No advance sign-up is necessary. The indoor session will be first-come, first served and the doors will close when the room is full. The outdoor sessions will have no limit.

Seminar Leader: Jim is a member of the Neuse Sailing Association. Jim delivers sail and powerboats on the eastern seaboard and is a back-up towboat Captain for TowBoat/US in Oriental. Jim also brokers sail and power charter vessels, and has chartered in locations around the world.  Jim has been boating since 1968 on the east and west coasts and Caribbean.
