I am writing my first commodore’s log as Kevin and I are on the boat traveling to Florida. We are currently in Georgia in the midst of the beautiful salt marshes and wetlands iconic to Georgia’s landscape. This beautiful water scene makes me think of Past commodore Paul Griffin. Paul introduced me to a book called “Blue Mind” which suggests that being near, in, or on water evokes a sense of calmness, peacefulness and contentment. NSA is an amazing organization that brings us blue minded people together to share in a beautiful life surrounded by water and people who love being on the water. Our NSA 2022 year has already begun and in fact it really started in December 2021 with an unofficial NSA event. In December a group of NSA women; Michele DePietrio, Kathy Kenny, Tammy Richards, Kay Neuchterlein, Pat Thomaier, Mary Guilfoyle, Sharon McDonald, Divis Carrascal, Donna Crothers and Sharon Stephenson participated in the Silo’s Christmas Lip Sync fund raiser for the Pamlico County Arts Council. In Christmas costume the women sang their hearts out and amazingly all sounded just like Brenda Lee singing “Rocking around the Christmas tree.” Thanks to their husbands and friends who purchased over $400.00 worth of votes we won the 1st place trophy. The money raised was donated to the Pamlico County Arts Council. |
It was great to see so many NSA members out on New Years Day for the “Anything but Football” race. This is one fun race that was not limited to sailboats. The Neuse River was full of both sail boats and a few NSA power boats. Everyone out there seemed to be having a great time. NSA originally started sailboat racing in Oriental back in the 1970’s and it’s time for us to bring back those glory days of racing. One of the best ways to get to know your boat and improve your sailing skills is to participate in racing. I encourage new members as well as the old members to consider participating in either racing their own boat or crewing on another boat. Kevin and I had the opportunity to crew on Erik and Jean Hardtle’s Knot Shore and it was great to see the smile on Kevin’s face as he stood at the helm. More information will be coming out about the NSA 49th Anniversary Race that will be held in April. Let’s work together to make this a huge success. |
Jason Keyes Vice Commodore of cruising is planning some fantastic cruises for next year. Look in the Events Calendar on the website for more information on the dates and places. The Memorial Day cruise will be going to Ocracoke and the Labor Day cruise will be headed to Cape Lookout. For Newcomers in NSA the best way to meet the most people and have the most fun is to get active in the club and volunteer to help with the activities. Sharon Stephenson is always in need of volunteers to help with the Dingy Poker Run that is held in July. Tom and Alice, our Special Events coordinators, will need volunteers to help with the Oyster Roast on February 19th at the Red Rooster and the Shrimperoo March 26th at the Tiki Bar. In honor of Martin Luther King and his holiday this month here is a quote from Dr. King that is very fitting to our organization: “We may have all come on different ships, but we are in the same boat now.” In NSA I have found it doesn’t matter how big or small your boat or how old or new it is we have a comradeship that ties us all together and we all are truly in one boat together. … and what a great group of people to be on this NSA boat together. NCO WINTER SEMINAR SERIES – 2022 Sponsored by NSA, ODC, SCOO The Winter Seminar Series is in the final planning stages with hopes of starting on February 5th and continuing on the following Saturdays thru March 26th. This year’s event will begin as a ZOOM ONLY event due to the high rate of Covid infections currently in the county and State. We are finalizing the schedule and hope to have that out by January 21st along with the instructions of how to sign up for each presentation. This will be a good year with a good mix of topics and presenters. Last year’s Series was done on Zoom and was well received. We look forward to your participation. Chuck Gordon S/V Pelikan |

I’m looking forward to 2022 with the NSA! I’m planning to bring our club merchandise to the Oyster Roast in February but in the meantime it’s always available to order on our website. Our Facebook group is a closed group for our paid members. Please post your photos there and on our website for all of us to enjoy. Also post anything that you think other members may be interested in such as impromptu cruises, items for sell or wanted, etc. As a reminder, if you receive an “invitation” on Facebook for any of our activities and you respond to that invitation that you are attending or not, that response only lets the other members on Facebook see your intentions. It does not informally register you for any events. The only way to do that is to register on our website. The Facebook “invitation” only serves as a reminder for you. Happy New Year to all!

Newsletter Erik any I are sharing the VC Communications duties, and we share the same email address. We are looking forward to a great NSA year, and personally we plan to do more sailing this year. I'll ask the bridge for their input each month, but all members of the NSA are welcome to share news. Most of us, especially those of us unable to cruise, like to live vicariously through the stories of our traveling members, so please send your stories and photos to vccommunications@neusesailingassociation.org, and add "Neuse Juice" in the subject line. Jean Hardtle S/V Knot Shore Website I've updated the website with the 2022 Officers and Directors listing in the About section, and all email from the NSA addresses will route to their personal email addresses. I've added photos from the "Instead of Watching Football" regatta to the home page. The start of the new year is a good time to make sure your NSA info is up to date in your profile. It’s super easy, just click on your name in the upper right after logging in, and click the “edit profile” button. If you’ve forgotten your password, just go to the NSA website (www.neusesailingassociation.org), click on the “Log in” link and click on the “Forgot password” link to reset your password. Finally, if there are any errors, mistakes or updates needed on the website, be sure to let me know vccommunications@neusesailingassociation.org . Erik Hardtle S/V Knot Shore |
