'The Neuse Juice'

Volume 49 Number 6

This has been an exciting spring and summer For NSA Members. Many of the Chesapeake cruisers ended their cruise by sailing right into Ocracoke joining the NSA Memorial Day Cruisers. The Pamlico sound was a little rough as usual and we all had to be very careful to avoid the shoaling that was right outside the channel coming into Ocracoke. It was very impressive to see our NSA members helping each other come in just as the winds picked up on Silver Lake. Chuck Gordon and Sharon Stephenson cruise captains for the Memorial Day cruise did an outstanding job making sure everyone had a great time at the social Saturday night. It was wonderful to see the big turnout of old and new members. Thanks to everyone that helped make the Ocracoke Cruise a great success.

Congratulations to the NSA Ladies for again winning 1st prize in the Lip Sync contest. Proceeds for the contest will go to the Pamlico County Arts Council. The women did a fantastic job silently signing and fanning. Such talent! The NSA men made this contest a great success by voting with their dollars for their favorite performers. The La Bamba singers included: Leslie
Corriher, Tammy Richards, Cara Keyes, Kay Nuechterlein, Sharon McDonald, Debbie Slook and Sharon Stephenson.

The Dingy Poker Run on July 23rd is another NSA charitable event that supports Pamlico County. The Poker Run is open to the community and is a great family event. This event depends on NSA volunteers to make it a success. Proceeds from the Poker Run provides financial support for swimming, sailing and other water activities for Pamlico County Youth. More information about the event will be coming out soon. Keep your eyes open to see how you can participate. The week long is just about ready to start. As of this writing 16 boats have signed up to cruise to Wrightsville and Carolina Beach. Past Commodore Paul Griffin has graciously offered his yacht club for the social. It will be great to see Paul again. Jason Keyes, the cruise captain and Vice Commodore of cruising has put together an exciting cruise. For Boats that are interested in ocean sailing this is a wonderful opportunity. Other boats may prefer to take the ICW. Both Wrightsville and Carolina Beach have great restaurants and shops. It should be a fun week!

The Commodores Ball is set for November 12th at the Stanly Hall Ballroom located in historic downtown New Bern. In the past 2 years, because of COVID, the number of people that could attend was limited. Both Carl Crothers and Jeff Kenyon as commodores during that time did a great job in putting together a “modified Commodores Ball”. This year the safety requirements have been lifted and we can get back to celebrating the wonderful year we had together with no limitations. It should be a beautiful evening of dining and dancing and I hope everyone will mark their calendars and plan to attend. I’d like to involve more of the membership in planning the event so if you are interested in being part of the Decorating Committee please contact me. You can either email me (3110marymoore@gmail.com) or call/text me at 252-617-7014.

So as we move forward for the rest of the year remember:

2022 Dinghy Poker Run – July 23

The NCO-sponsored Dinghy Poker Run is scheduled for Saturday, July 23 at the Oriental Marina & Inn starting at 9:30 AM. MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

The Nautical Co-op of Oriental sponsored Dinghy Poker Run at the Oriental Marina & Tiki Bar will be here soon. Hands will go on sale at 0930and the run will start at 1100 with stops at 7 docks up Smith & Green Creeks. Poker hands can also be drawn at the Tiki Bar. We will serve food starting at 1230. There will be silent & live auctions. We will continue to donate the proceeds to promote and provide for youth sailing.

We are hoping all of you will come out for this fun event and support our efforts by buying poker hands and auction items. Remember this is an event for the community, so invite your dock neighbors, your out-of-town friends & family (great fun for the grand kids!), etc.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We are also looking for your help before and on the day of the event.

First, we need items to use for prizes for winning hands and items to use in the silent and live auctions. These can be actual items or gift certificates to specific places or for services or adventures. As you are doing your spring cleaning and have items you no longer need, consider donating those. We would like to have all auction and prize items in hand by Friday July 15.

We are in urgent need of volunteers to ask businesses and others with items or services to donate. We have a list of contacts who have donated in the past making this process easier. We also have a formal letter to use when asking folks for donations.

Advertising – Help now to place flyers around town at businesses, marinas, etc

Auction items organization – This will take place during the week leading up to the event. Help will be needed to prepare bid sheets, create posters and anything else needed to get the items ready.

Set up – 0800 July 23. Organize tables for hand & raffle sales & food, place auction items, etc

Poker hand & raffle ticket sales – starts at 0930. Since we have the option for land hands we will continue selling hands & raffle tickets until ~1315. We need volunteers to cover 0930 – 1130 & 1130 – 1315 time slots.

Food management – Help needed with set-up & oversight of serving.

Hand dealers – These are the folks at each dock who manage the drawing of cards when participants arrive. It’s good to have 2 people at each dock. Land hand dealers also needed.

Tally hands – Will need to collect the hands as folks come in after the run as well as the land hands & determine the highest hands. Familiarity with poker hand rankings is preferable.

Silent auction oversight – Monitor activity at the silent auction, answer questions, etc. We have 2 shifts: 0930 - 1130 & 1130 - ~1315

Oversight of prizes for winning hands – Help keep prize giving moving.

Helpers for live auction – Show the item being auctioned. Help auctioneer keep up with bidders. Spotters also needed to record the winning bidder.

Silent auction wrap-up – will need to pick up bid sheets when the silent auction closes & record the winners. Will also need to organize the winner cards for easier pick-up by the winners.

Payment processors – Help with collection of payments for auction items. Familiarity with using Square for credit card transactions will be helpful.

Clean up – self explanatory! We hope to be finished by 1530

Contact me with any donations, to volunteer for any of these positions or any questions you may have. You can also volunteer for “put me where you need me” if you want to help but don’t have a specific thing you want to do. More detailed instructions will be provided for each task.

Call or text: 919-414-7719 or email: srstephenson1420@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome Our New Members

We had a fantastic turnout of some of our newer NSA members for the Ocracoke Memorial Day Cruise. It’s great to see people diving right in! In the past month, we have had the following folks join the club: Bob and Karen Abt of Holly Springs, owners of S/V Aquila, which they keep at Whittaker Creek Marina, and Lenn Murrelle and Melissa Devenny of Midlothian Va., owners of S/V Finally, which they keep at a home dock near Camp Don Lee.

Please be sure to say hello to our new members when you see them! If you have friends who might enjoy the NSA, please point them to the website or have them give me a call at 336 403 6534.

See you on the water soon!
