NSA - TIME TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS!!!

Summertime has arrived! Happy July!! The weather report until October will be “hot with a chance of showers and possible thunderstorms” for both morning and afternoon!!   If only everything was that predictable!! One thing that we can count on is, if it’s an NSA event it will be fun!! This year’s Week long was a great time and thanks to Tracy, Robert, Mary and Dan for organizing the trip!  Everything from our Bonner Bay Anchorage to the finale at Dowry Creek was perfectly planned and thanks to all who participated.

NSA was well represented in the Croaker Festival Parade!   Thanks to Pat and John for organizing and planning the float and bringing people together to walk in the Parade!!   We had a good turnout to decorate the float and then a group of 25+ to walk/ride with the float. It was a fun way to let Oriental know that NSA has been here for 50 years! Thanks to all who helped!

Between now and the next "Neuse Juice" we have 3 events. The Dog Days Cruise is headed for Morehead City which is a great destination!  On July 29th the 16th annual Dinghy Poker Run will take place. The DPR was originally a NSA event, but now falls under the Nautical CO-OP of Oriental’s banner. This is a fun day on water and land which raises money to support the youth of Pamlico County to go to Sailing Camp and other nautical activities. Please join in the fun and offer to volunteer to help with the event.

On August 4th is the Lazy Day Cruise to West Bay.  This is a great anchorage (weather depending) with a good beach to play on. Make plans to be there!

We have had a great year so far and I thank each of you for being a part of the NSA! For 50 years NSA has been an important part of the Oriental community and I hope it will continue to be for another 50+ years!   We have a unique club because our membership is primarily made up of folks that do not live in Oriental and are still working but share a love for the water, adventure and enjoying life!

Wishing everyone fair winds and smooth sailing! Once again if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns about NSA please contact me.  Cell: 919-880-7879, email: chuckgordon55@yahoo.com

Dinghy Poker Run Volunteers Needed

Dinghy Poker Run – July 29 – IT’S ALMOST HERE!

The Nautical Co-op of Oriental sponsored Dinghy Poker Run at the Oriental Marina & Tiki Bar is scheduled for Saturday, July 29.

Hands will go on sale at 9:30AM and the run will start at 11:00AM with stops at 7 docks up Smith, Green & Kershaw Creeks.   Poker hands can also be drawn at the Tiki Bar. Lunch will be hot dogs from Roadside Dogs at 12:30PM.   There will be silent & live auctions.

Proceeds will be used to provide scholarships to kids for sailing camp & swimming lessons.   We are hoping all of you will come out for this fun event and support our efforts by buying poker hands and auction items.   Remember this is an event for the community, so invite your dock neighbors, your out-of-town friends & family (great fun for the grandkids!), etc.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are still looking for volunteers before and on the day of the event.

First, we need items to use for prizes for winning hands and items to use in the silent and live auctions. These can be actual items or gift certificates to specific places or for services or adventures. As you are doing your spring cleaning and have items you no longer need, consider donating those.

All items & gift certificates must be turned in by Sunday, July 23.

Additional help to ask businesses and others with items or services to donate would be appreciated. We have a list of contacts who have donated in the past making this process easier. We also have a formal letter to use when asking folks for donations.

Auction items organization

– This will take place during the week leading up to the event. Help will be needed to prepare bid sheets, create posters and anything else needed to get the items ready.

Load auction items & other event materials – Friday afternoon (7/28) –

I need a few folks who have either a covered pick-up or large SUV to load items before the event & then deliver them to the Tiki Bar on Saturday morning at 7:00AM.

Set up

7:00AM July 29 - silent auction setup

8:00AM– set up the rest of the site – tables, chairs, registration, etc.

Poker hand sales

– starts at 9:30AM. Since we have the option for land hands, we will continue selling hands until ~ 1:15PM. I still need 2 volunteers to cover the 11:15AM – 1:15PM time.

Raffle ticket sales
- I still need 2 people for 9:30AM – 11:15AM & one more person for 11:1AM5 – 1:15PM.

Food service

– Lunch will be prepared by Roadside Dogs, but help is needed to take up meal tickets, serve drinks, etc.

Bake cookies
In an effort to keep down costs, we are asking for home baked cookies to use for dessert. I need 6 more volunteers to bake 3 dozen cookies each.

Hand dealers
– All the docks have dealers, but land hand dealers are still needed. I need one more for 9:30AM – 11:15AM & 2 for 11:15AM – 1:15PM.

Tally hands
– Poker hands are collected as folks come in after the run and when land hands are drawn. Hands need to be ranked to determine the winners. Familiarity with poker hand rankings is preferable.

Silent auction oversight
– Monitor activity at the silent auction, answer questions, etc. We have 2 shifts; 1 person still needed for 9:30AM – 11:30AM.

Oversight of prizes for winning hands
– One person needed to help keep prize giving moving.

Helpers for live auction

– One person is needed to show the item being auctioned. Two people are needed to serve as spotters during the auction. Spotters will help the auctioneer keep up with the bids and then record the winning bidders.

Silent auction wrap-up

– Will need to pick up bid sheets when the silent auction closes & record the winners. Will also need to organize the winner cards for easier pick-up by the winners & assist winners in collecting their items.

Payment processors

– Help with collection of payments for auction items. Familiarity with using card readers for credit card transactions will be helpful.

Clean up
– Self explanatory! We hope to be finished by 3:30PM

Let’s beat the summer heat and cruise on over to the wide-open anchorage field of West Bay!

Please go to the website for more details.

The week long cruise
The week long cruise was a resounding success with a wide variety of locations and activities to suite everyone’s needs and allow new members to get to know everyone.  While the weather was a bit unpredictable, we had good wind for sailing on each leg of the trip.

On all cruises, please remember that while the schedules might seem full, no one is expected to attend all functions.  The goals is that you find available activities that suit you and allow you to meet like minded people.  With opportunities for exercise, shopping, touring, exploring, eating out, boat hopping or doing nothing, your sure to find activities you enjoy and find others who enjoy the same thing.

Many thanks to Dan and Mary who jumped in with both feet as cruise captains for the week long and provided lots of varied opportunities!

Next up is Morehead City with Bruce, Kay, Tammy and Todd as cruise captains.  I’m sure they will have lots of fun activities planned for us! You should have already made your reservations for the marina or be prepared to anchor out.  Please subscribe to the forum on the website and keep an eye out for updates and answers to any questions you may have.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again soon!

See you on the water!

The Week-Long Cruise Summary – Belhaven & Washington, NC

June 17-25, 2023

The cruise began Saturday, June 17 with a nice trip up the Neuse and Bay Rivers in beautiful weather to an anchorage in Bonner Bay off the Bay River. About 6 boats rafted up to Kindred Spirits and served as the base for a meet-up party as boats arrived. The remainder of the fleet anchored out and dinghied to the party.

The next morning, the fleet got underway early heading north to Belhaven and the newly renamed Grand Manor Marina (formerly River Forest Marina). The winds picked up later in the afternoon making it an exciting challenge for the last arrivals to get into slips. But, all did safely and without damage.

That afternoon the Belhaven Chamber of Commerce welcomed our crews with a cookout of sausage, salads and wine and beer. It was quite fun and special to have such a welcome to the town.

Monday in Belhaven many of the shops and restaurants are closed but a number of them opened knowing that a large number of boaters were going to be in town. Many members stretched their legs by making the short walk into town while others borrowed one of the 5-6 golf carts the marina offers to boaters free of charge. That afternoon the marina’s new owners brought in a musician to sing and play for our fleet and invited the town’s folk to come as well. That evening many members went to Spoon River Artworks and Market for dinner.

Tuesday was a travel day. Fortunately, the wind from Monday afternoon had laid down so everyone was able to get out early without trouble. It was quite a special sight to see the fleet of 14 NSA boats motoring or sailing down the Pungo River and up the Pamlico River.

The Washington City Docks brought in extra help to bring our large fleet into slips all within a few hours, one right after another. Tuesday everyone was on their own to relax and enjoy Washington.

Wednesday the weather turned to overcast skies with occasional showers, some heavy. But that didn’t dampen the spirits of the NSA crews. Due to the weather, the NSA social was held on Kindred Spirit. The umbrellas came out so all was good. Wednesday and Thursday the crews were able to enjoy a number of activities in Washington including shopping, exercise in the park, The Estuarium, a tour of the historic Turnage Theater, and a dinghy exploration ride. Because of the weather, a couple of other events were unfortunately canceled.

Thursday morning Knot Shore hosted a wonderful Bloody Mary Brunch. Couples drew a number to go to one of four restaurants in small groups on Thursday night.

Friday was another travel day. Some boats headed back to Belhaven, this time to Dowry Creek Marina for a pool party and cookout. Others were tired from the busy week and headed home. Those who went to Dowry Creek made the trip home on Sunday, June 25.

Welcome Our New Members and NSA Name Tags

In June, the NSA provided us with a great, fun-filled week long cruise. The weather cooperated (for the most part) and we filled the days with exploration, laughs, good food, and fantastic company. The cruising captains ensured that many fun things and social opportunities were planned. The marinas and communities were so welcoming and gracious.

We hope to see more new members on our upcoming Dog Days Cruise, July 14-16th, and for the Dinghy Poker run on July 29th.If you have friends who might enjoy the NSA, please point them to the website or have them email me sharon@yondercove.com
