NSA - TIME TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS!!!

Believe it or not but it is June and I’m hoping the weather this month will be more cooperative than May’s! We had a fun trip to the Chesapeake but it was cold and windy part of the time!! I am sorry we were not able to get to Ocracoke for Memorial Day and want to thank the NSAers who made it and helped continue NSA Time in Ocracoke. Thanks to VPs of Cruising Tracy and Robert and Cruise Captains Christa and David for making things happen!!

The Weeklong to Belhaven, Washington and Dowry Creek is coming up next week! Looks like the VCs of Cruising Tracy and Robert and the Cruise Captains, Dan and Mary, have a great trip planned. I encourage those of you who can participate to do so. Go to forum for the Weeklong and check it out! 2023 Weeklong Forum

Coming up soon is the Croaker Festival and the NSA will have an entry in the Parade. More information on that to follow. Also at the end of July the Dinghy Poker Run ( July 29th ) and we are counting on you to help with the event as well as participate in the fun. This is a great fundraiser to help Pamlico County youth go to Sailing Camp and other nautical activities.

Enjoy your June activities and look forward to seeing some of you on the Weeklong Cruise and at the Crocker Festival Parade. Be safe and wishing you fair winds

As always be safe on the water ( and everywhere). Once again if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns about

NSA please contact me Cell: 919-880-7879, email: chuckgordon55@yahoo.com

Dinghy Poker Run Volunteers Needed

Dinghy Poker Run – July 29

The Nautical Co-op of Oriental sponsored Dinghy Poker Run at the Oriental Marina & Tiki Bar will be here soon. Hands will go on sale at 9:30AM and the run will start at 11:00AM with stops at 7 docks up Smith & Green Creeks. Poker hands can also be drawn at the Tiki Bar. We will serve food starting at 12:30PM. There will be silent & live auctions. Proceeds will be used to provide scholarships to kids for sailing camp & swimming lessons.

We are hoping all of you will come out for this fun event and support our efforts by buying poker hands and auction items. Remember this is an event for the community, so invite your dock neighbors, your out-of-town friends & family (great fun for the grandkids!), etc.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We are also looking for your help before and on the day of the event.

First, we need items to use for prizes for winning hands and items to use in the silent and live auctions. These can be actual items or gift certificates to specific places or for services or adventures. As you are doing your spring cleaning and have items you no longer need, consider donating those. All items & gift certificates must be turned in by Sunday July 23.

We are in urgent need of volunteers to ask businesses and others with items or services to donate. We have a list of contacts who have donated in the past making this process easier. We also have a formal letter to use when asking folks for donations.

  • Advertising – Help now to place flyers around town at businesses, marinas, etc.
  • Auction items organization – This will take place during the week leading up to the event. Help will be needed to prepare bid sheets, create posters and anything else needed to get the items ready.
  • Set up – 8:00AM July 23. Organize tables for hand & raffle sales & food, place auction items, etc.
  • Poker hand & raffle ticket sales – starts at 9:30AM. Since we have the option for land hands, we will continue selling hands & raffle tickets until 1:15PM. We need volunteers to cover 9:30AM – 11:30AM & 11:30AM – 1:15PM time slots.
  • Food service – Lunch will be prepared by Roadside Dogs, but help is needed to take up meal tickets, serve drinks, etc.
  • Bake cookies – In an effort to keep down costs, we are asking for home baked cookies to use for dessert.
  • Hand dealers – These are the folks at each dock who manage the drawing of cards when participants arrive. 2 people are needed for each dock. Land hand dealers also needed.
  • Tally hands – Poker hands are collected the as folks come in after the run and when land hands are drawn. Hands need to be ranked to determine the winners. Familiarity with poker hand rankings is preferable.
  • Silent auction oversight – Monitor activity at the silent auction, answer questions, etc. We have 2 shifts: 9:30AM - 11:30AM & 11:30AM - 1:15PM
  • Oversight of prizes for winning hands – Help keep prize giving moving.
  • Helpers for live auction – Show the item being auctioned. Help auctioneer keep up with bidders and record the winning bidders.
  • Silent auction wrap-up – Will need to pick up bid sheets &record the winners when the silent auction closes.  Will also need to organize the winner cards for easier pick-up by the winners.
  • Payment processors – Help with collection of payments for auction items. Familiarity with using Square for credit card transactions will be helpful.
  • Clean up – self explanatory! We hope to be finished by 3:30pm

Contact me to volunteer for any of these positions or any questions you may have. You can also volunteer for “put me where you need me” if you want to help but are flexible as to task. More detailed instructions will be provided for each task.

Call or text: 919-414-7719 or email: srstephenson1420@gmail.com.

Contact Karen Kleiner to volunteer to help with collecting auction items or to donate items – 252-659-1920 or kpkleiner@gmail.com.

We look forward to hearing from you.

    Recent Cruises

Memorial Day Cruise to Ocracoke May 26th – 29th

Cruise Captains Chuck Gordon & Sharon Stephenson and David & Christa Kreutz.

Strong and persistent Northerlies kept many wise cruisers from attempting the crossing to Ocracoke. Several Chesapeake cruisers remained hunkered down where the weather caught them. But those 8 boats who were able to arrive in Ocracoke early were treated to a different kind of Memorial Day Cruise.

Despite the cold, wind and rain, we found ways to have fun and enjoy each other’s company and the island.

One evening, there was a traveling tapas party, where sailors got to visit each other's boats, play cards and socialise. (Capacity limits may have been exceeded on some boats.)

Saturday brought howling winds, with most folks hunkered down in the boats, maybe actually reading that book they packed. But the island trams were running with rain protection! And with few customers, the drivers even invited the dogs to ride, which they loved.

Some folks attended the fundraiser on Saturday evening, the Annual Fireman's Ball with an auction and BBQ. Slightly smaller crowds meant huge portions of delicious BBQ. Live music followed the auction. The event raised over $170k for the volunteer fire department.

Since there was a rainy, windy forecast for Saturday, the official NSA social was moved to Sunday afternoon for better weather. A couple of boats had to leave that morning, and we were sad to see them go. But the other 6 were there and we had a nice picnic on the government docks between boats. The sun even came out for a bit!

Over all this was a sweet, restful vacation. There was plenty of time for naps, card games, playing ukulele, and swapping sea stories. We enjoyed getting to know each other better and having the island (almost) to ourselves.

    NSA boats present:

Kindred Spirit, Sol Mate, Carolina Ketch, Eärendel, Misto, Island Girl, Private Idaho and Cymbeline.

    Thanks,
    Christa

    Chesapeake Roundup

Rain, high winds, cold temps – the 2023 Chesapeake Cruise was a testament to NSA’s ability to have fun in any conditions.  Nine of the ten boats reached the Chesapeake around April 28, but severe storms immediately scattered the fleet.  That tenth boat, Absentia, last seen at Alligator River Marina, embarked on her own unplanned odyssey of improvisation.   Sample: pulling a 38’ Cabo Rico back across the Albemarle Sound and through the bridge, in darkness, with a 6 hp outboard motor. Lots to tell, but for now let’s just say Darlene and Steve returned safely and are waiting for their new diesel engine.

    Back to the Chesapeake

While the storm kept us apart, text messages (Thanks, Dan) kept everyone in touch, and most eventually made it to Solomons, MD for a meet up. While we were touring and enjoying the area, Wade Ellison quietly arranged for a surprise ceremony at the Calvert Marine Museum. We all watched as the Faith and Freedom Quilts of Valor organization of Lusby, MD presented beautiful quilts to three of our veterans: Carl Crothers, Peter Flood and John Messer.  John Taylor, also a vet, was already enroute to Havre de Grace.  A visit to Solomons is always on the Chesapeake itinerary, but this time it was extra special.

After Solomons, the weather improved, and the fleet again spread out to explore. The NSA burgee flew in Havre de Grace, Baltimore, St. Michaels, Yorktown, Urbanna, Cambridge, Oxford, and Deltaville. Everyone enjoyed delicious seafood and learned more about the crabbing industry and the significance of these ports during the War of 1812.  Captain Ron made his customary appearance on a slow night in Deltaville.   Eventually, it was time to turn southward, but once again, the weather took control. The forecast was calling for winds of 20-30 kts and higher. Some boats got ahead of it, but a small contingent will be forever grateful to Coinjock Marina for providing secure dockage as a one, maybe two-night stay turned into six nights.  The winds howled, but everyone had found a safe port, whether at Coinjock, back in Oriental, or at Manteo, Urbanna or Ocracoke.   Finally, after almost a week, the winds quieted, and we had two beautiful days to make the trip home.  The 2023 Chesapeake Cruise officially ended when Loro Loco reported in at 5PM on May 30. What a cruise!
