'The Neuse Juice'

Volume 49 Number 5

Commodore's Log

Greetings from the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. NSA has 13 boats meandering around the Chesapeake enjoying our boats and coming together sometime each day to compare stories of our trip and plan the next stop.  All but one of the 13 boats started off to Dowry Creek on Saturday April 23, 2022.  Kevin and I started off the trip at 7:00AM on the 23rd and ended up at 7:04AM back in our slip on Smith Creek behind our house.  During those 4 minutes between leaving the dock and returning to the dock we experienced one of the most frightening experiences we  had on the boat.  With as hard as Kevin tried to steer the boat out of the dock and into the channel the boat seemed to have a mind of its own. What a terrible way to start a trip to the Chesapeake! Using the two engines rather than the wheel got us safely back into the slip. Kevin was able to contact a mechanic  to come to look at the boat and see if the steering could be repaired.  The diagnosis was bad! He said we had an old boat (1979) and the parts that we would need were probably not even made anymore. His solution was for us to sell the boat and get a newer one.  We were sick. This could not be true. Instead of having fun at Dowry Creek Kevin spent the night watching You Tube trying to figure out how to fix steering on a boat.  The next day one of our great NSA members Michael Doncaster diagnosed and fixed our boat within the day.  So off   we were to beautiful Cruise and caught up with the NSA Fleet in Hampton at Bluewater Marina. Everyone has been having a great time on the water and at their choice of spots to visit on the Chesapeake.  One of our newest members Joni Floyd posted on Facebook  “ THE CHESAPEAKE trip is AWESOME”, and she said it right! Thanks to John and Pat for making this fantastic cruise possible.

Speaking of awesome Erik Hardtle is planning one heck of a Halloween cruise for the weekend of  October 21st -23rd. Please take a look at the EVENTS section on Wild Apricot and register for the cruise. Of course we don’t have to wait until October to get together again.

There are all kinds of opportunities this month even if you are not on the Chesapeake Cruise. Don’t forget the Ocracoke cruise which Chuck will be telling us more about below.

Leslie Wells-Corriher is spearheading another NSA Ladies Lip Sync for the Pamlico Arts on May 22nd at the Red Rooster.  Tammy, Kay, Sharon and Leslie will be performing La Bamba. They  will be wearing black dresses with red roses in their hair and fans in their hand while shaking their maracas.  Wish them luck and be prepared to vote with your dollars so NSA can bring home another trophy while supporting a good cause.

Well it’s time for me to head over to the NSA social being held at the Chesapeake Yacht Club. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Ocracoke !

Cruising Update

Hello, captains!

We have updates below from the Chesapeake and the Ocrocoke cruise captains.

Memorial Day Cruise to Ocracoke, May 27 – 30, 2022

Cruise Captain: Chuck Gordon

Ok folks, Memorial Day is almost here!! The Anchorage Marina has assigned our allotted slips (last I heard they had room for 2 30’ boats, so give them a call if you need a slip, or a if you have a bigger boat you can ask to be put on the waiting list).

People will be leaving for Ocracoke on  various days and times, so please post on the Ocracoke forum your departure day and time so people can sail over together if desired. There will be a social on the Anchorage Gazebo dock on Saturday at 3/4ish bring a small appetizer to share, the NSA will provide beer, wine and water. Gatherings on the dock , poolside, beach , dinners and bar hopping will be spontaneous so join in!

It’s too far out to predict the weather, but we will keep an eye on it. If you have any questions, thoughts or concerns contact me!

Chuck Gordon, Cruise Captain (we always need people to help with Cruises so contact your Vice Commodore Jason Keys to volunteer! )  via text , call or email: 919 880 7979 or chuckgordon55@yahoo.com

Chesapeake Cruise, departed on Saturday, April 23

Cruise Captains: Pat Thomaier & John Messier

We’ve been on the water for two weeks now. The NSA burgee has been flying in Yorktown, Cape Charles, Kilmarnick,  Solomons and  Urbana already, with impromptu socials all along the way.  Right now, many of us are hunkered down at the Chesapeake Yacht Club, Tim Drake’s wonderful long time home port, waiting out the rain and expected 40 mph gusts. Some days are good for … sleeping.

A few minor boat issues and one major one as Pelican suffered serious damage when a small fishing boat carelessly (recklessly?)  crossed in front, leaving its lines below to snarl the prop and damage the prop shaft, and leaving Kathryn and Enrique with an extended stay in Solomons. Ugh.

With better weather coming, some of us are planning on short hops around the northern Chesapeake this week before turning south for a slow return home. See you back in NC!

Thank you John, Pat & Chuck for the updates, we are hoping for a good turnout on all of these cruises.

2022 Dinghy Poker Run – July 23

The NCO-sponsored Dinghy Poker Run is scheduled for Saturday July 23 at the Oriental Marina & Inn starting at 9:30 AM. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! For those of you who have not participated in this event, it is always fun & is a great community fund raiser. In addition to the poker run, there will be lunch and silent & live auctions.

But, this event does require lots of volunteers to make it all happen and I am now recruiting. At this time, I need folks who will help solicit items to be used in the auctions. Even if you know only one or two folks you would feel comfortable asking (we do have letters to explain to potential donors the event & its proceeds), that would be most helpful. We have a list of prior donors we generally work from.

I also need volunteers to help distribute flyers about the event to be put around town in early to mid-June.

Many more volunteers will be needed just before & on the day of the event. I will send out more specific requests at a later date.

Please let me know if you would be willing to help with some of these tasks or if you want to go ahead & get your name in for later volunteer positions. Volunteering is a great way for you to meet other members. Also let me know if you have items you would like to donate for the auctions. I look forward to hearing from you!

Stay tuned for upcoming details.
