The Commodore's Log

Hello NSA! Hard to believe that as I write this there are less than 90 days left in the year (and DECADE!).

While the days are getting shorter and colder, our October activities are heating up. Please read on below for more information on our upcoming Fall Cruise to West Bay and Halloween Cruise to Beaufort at the end of this month.

We have had a great year and there is a lot to celebrate, so please make sure you register for the Commodore's Ball at River Dunes on November 9th. Event registration here. More info on the annual meeting will be coming out shortly, but go ahead and mark your calendars for Brantley's Restaurant on November 9th and 9:00 am.

Best Regards,

Paul Griffin

October Cruises Right Around the Corner

October brings our final 2 cruises of the year. The Fall Cruise is October 12-13 heading for West bay and The Halloween Cruise is October 26-27 in Beaufort.

Fall Cruise

The Fall cruise is coming very shortly and looks like it will be a well-attended event, keeping with the 2019 trend! 21 boats are registered for this cruise to West Bay near Cedar Island in the Pamlico Sound.  If winds and weather do not cooperate, Cruise Chairpersons Scott Westwood and Sandra Emerson have a backup plan in place to sneak back into the Bay River to Vandemere.  Keep an eye out for posts in the Forum, Facebook and your email for up to the minute updates regarding any changes. Either way, be prepared for a great gathering with NSA friends at either location!

Update From Cruise Captain Scott

We plan to anchor outside the bay since it is closer to the better beach but weather could change that to anchoring inside. We shall see.

If you don't have a Dinghy available, come anyway.  Just sing out early in the forum or send me an e-mail.  We have all been there.  Somebody will give you a lift.  Don't let that stop you.

We plan to get there early to setup.  Social starting at 3 pm (Adjustable of course).  Let us know if that is too early or too late.  As usual, NSA will be monitoring Channel 68 as a fleet channel.

As a wind/weather alternative we plan to head to Vandemere Creek.   There is a dock called "Up-The-Creek" with some slips available.  We got permission to use them.  Maybe only about 6 have deep enough draft??  You decide for your boat.  The list is in the forum and sent to all participants.  Most slips have power and the slips are free but maybe $10 for power.  You can still anchor out.  Plenty of room after the left dogleg.  It opens up inside.  I have seen at least 8 ft most of the way in the creek.  If you have a deep draft look at the slip depths below to assess.  First come, first serve. There are no amenities AT ALL on shore.   No heads.  No boathouse.  Nothing. Only the docks and power.  We would setup tables on shore for the social.

Rough coordinates for West Bay anchorage.

Outside West Bay anchoring is "roughly" 35* 02.011 N    76* 20.130 W

Inside West Bay is 35* 00.996 N  76*20.130 W

Alternate Vandemere Creek is "roughly" 35* 11.926 N  76* 38.976 W (Turn North just before reaching marker 5 (Green) up Bay River)

Weather/Wind will decide which is best.  We will have to decide at the last minute whether to anchor out/in or try Vandemere Creek.  I will solicit feedback from the fleet closer to the event.

If anybody has any other alternatives, sing out.

See you all there.

Halloween Cruise

Planning for the Halloween cruise is well under way. Again – look for updates in the Forum, Facebook and your email for updates.  28 boats and cars are registered for this event.  Many members plan to arrive Friday to make a long weekend of it and enjoy all that Beaufort has to offer. NSA has filled Beaufort Docks, and we are working a standby list if space opens up. A social is planned on the docks Saturday followed by a pizza party at the Black Sheep overlooking the harbor. For those arriving Friday, and informal gathering “might” just happen! Thanks to John Messer and Pat Thomaier for being the cruise captains for the final cruise of 2019!

VC Cruising Salute

What a great year it has been cruising with NSA for Pat and me! Being with old friends and making new ones, going to familiar places and new made for a great summer for both of us, and we hope for you too.  I am so pleased to see the level of participation in the club for the cruises and really all the events.  We have collectively built a club worth being a member that is growing each year.

Can 2020 be far away? By this New Englander standards, not very far at all!

For everything you have done to make NSA what it is, we salute you.

Membership

Welcome New Members!

As we enter one of the most pleasant sailing seasons of the year, we have new members to welcome to the NSA! Joining the NSA during the past month are: Mike and Sue Pail of Cary, with S/V Betelgeuse at Oriental Harbor Marina, and Mike and Titti Herrity of Greensboro, with S/V Broad Reach at Pecan Grove Marina.

If you have friends or neighbors who might enjoy being NSA members, be sure to invite them – and joining the NSA at the end of the year is a bargain. Membership will extend until April 2021! Now that is a great deal!

Look forward to seeing you on the water!

Commodore's Ball

There are only 93 spaces remaining so be sure to register soon!  You won't want to miss the best party in town!  Registration will close on November 2nd so we can give a final headcount.  Please be sure to make your payment when you register so we can count you as attending.  A good time will be had by all!

Our Annual Meeting will be held the same day at 9:00 AM at Brantley's.  People typically arrive early so they can order breakfast before the meeting starts.  Our Commodore, Paul, will be sending out more information as the date gets closer so be on the lookout for an e-mail.
