NSA - TIME TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS!!!

May has arrived and it’s time to get out on the Neuse and test out your vessels. The Memorial Day Cruise is not too far away so get prepared to enjoy Ocracoke this year. We have 57 registrants and looking for more!! ( More information about Ocracoke below). Remember you can always take the Ferry over but look for a place to stay soon.

I am writing this article sitting in Pelikan waiting out “weather” at the Atlantic Yacht Basin in Chesapeake VA.   Cruising is great but one needs to make good decisions to insure safe passage.  To add to some more complications the bridges and locks on the way that need to be scheduled and added to that there are maintenance issues with some of them.  Anyway hoping for a weather window so we can get to Portsmouth VA. We have had a good trip so far and plan on it to remain that way!!

We made it to Portsmouth and for tonight with the intentions of heading north up the bay.  We started on the 3rd day and ran into heavy winds.   We finally got tied up and now will await the next good weather window.  Portsmouth and Norfolk are nice towns to visit but we are looking forward to other places north of here.

As you know this is our 50th Anniversary year so let’s make NSA as visible as possible! Please fly your NSA burgees whenever out on the water! When we arrive in Ocracoke we want them to know we are back!!  Due to you and our predecessors we have a great club!

As always be safe on the water ( and everywhere). If you have questions,

Cruising Update

The Chesapeake Cruise fleet has been having lots of fun and a bit of adventure as we navigated high winds and weather in the southern part of the Bay. We got a bit spread out as we moved North but many have convened in Solomon’s where we are enjoying warming temperatures and sunshine!

We’re excited to see many of you for our next cruise on Memorial Day weekend to Ocracoke!  We’re sure Chuck and Sharon and Dave and Krista will have lots of fun activities for us to enjoy

See you on the water!

Memorial Day Cruise to Ocracoke May 26th – 29th

Cruise Captains Chuck Gordon & Sharon Stephenson and David & Christa Kreutz.

The cruise to Ocracoke is quickly approaching! There have been 58 registrants so far and hopefully there will be many more! Please remember to join the Memorial Day Forum which will be used to send out information about weather, activities, and departures to and from Ocracoke. We encourage you to post when you will be leaving for Ocracoke so others can sail with you. There are two channels going in to the island Big Foot Slough which is the ferry channel and 9’ channel. Please take time to look at your charts about both of these options. More information about them will be posted to the Forum.

Those who requested a slip in February have heard from Anchorage Marina and assigned a slip. Other options are the Government Docks, which are a 1st come 1st serve basis, and Silver Lake Anchorage.

  •  Make sure to fly your BURGEE during the Event!

There will be a social at the Gazebo at Anchorage Marine at 4PM on Saturday. Bring an appetizer to share and the club will provide Beverages.        For those who might be interested there will be a bring your own dinner and beverages gathering at 5:30 PM on Sunday evening at the Gazebo or the area next to Government Docks. Bring chairs.

  • BYODC – Bring Your Own Dishes and Cups to events to cut back on trash and be environmentally friendly.

There are so many things to do on the island from good restaurants and Bars and Brewery to going to Springers Point beach as well as the Ocean side beaches. I encourage member to invite others to spontaneous activities. I believe posting on the forum and word of mouth is the best way. We need everyone’s help to make it a great weekend.

We will be sending out emails or posting on the forum with more information before the Cruise. Please fly your NSA burgee to let Ocracoke know that NSA is on the island.

We love a parade!   Croakerfest Parade!

Calling all showmen and women! Help us celebrate NSA’s 50th anniversary by being part of the Croakerfest Parade on Saturday July 1st.

Once the Croakerfest committee announces this year’s theme, we’ll be looking for ideas, float decorators and of course, some of NSA’s finest to wave to the crowds on parade day.

Contact Pat Thomaier, if you can help with any of these.

    Dinghy Poker Run Volunteers Needed

Once again, I am looking for volunteers to help solicit and gather items to be used in the silent and live auctions, as well as for prizes for winning poker hands for the NCO DPR, scheduled for Saturday July 29. Karen Kleiner will be in charge of coordinating and following up with the volunteers for this task. Even if you know only one or two folks you would feel comfortable asking (we do have letters to explain to potential donors the event & its proceeds), that would be most helpful.

    *  Click here to see the list of donors in 2022, as well as some potential new donors.

The list includes names of those who have already volunteered to contact potential donors. If you would be willing to help in this endeavor, please let Karen or me know who you will contact.

Also, if you know of other potential donors, please let us know that as well. We are looking for items, artwork or experiences.

The auctions usually have many used items that individuals have donated, so consider the DPR if you have things you are no longer using. We will take paintings/prints, other art work, nautical items – either decorative or functional, decorative pillows, items for entertaining – platters, bowls, napkins and placemats – jewelry and many other items.

All items need to be turned in no later than Saturday July 22.

The proceeds this year will continue to be used to promote youth sailing by providing scholarships to underprivileged children for sailing camp through the Pamlico Coastal Activities Council. In addition, this year part of the proceeds will be used for swimming lesson scholarships for these kids through Oriental United Methodist Church.

As we get closer to the event, I will be looking for volunteers to help at the DPR, so stay tuned!

    To volunteer for auction/prize solicitation:

    Karen Kleiner – kpkleiner@gmail.com   252-659-1920

    Or Sharon Stephenson – srstephenson1420@gmail.com   919-414-7719

Any help you can give us in collecting auction & prize items will be greatly appreciated.
