Many Grand Adventures Ahead!

Our commodore, Paul, has been hanging in Raleigh with Becky and Grace anxiously awaiting the arrival of our newest member, baby Jack.  Jack was scheduled to arrive last Saturday but is taking his sweet time.  Please keep the family in your thoughts as they begin this next grand adventure and welcome their new little one into the world!

Let the cruising begin!

2019 Memorial Day Cruise

NSA must be livin’ right.  After the strong winds over Easter weekend, we were blessed with near perfect conditions for Memorial Day.  25 boats spent the long weekend anchored out in the Cape Lookout Bight. A nice breeze kept the temperatures around 80 degrees, while inland they soared into the 90’s.  The inlet provided some challenging waves and dredging equipment avoidance tactics, but otherwise everyone made it there and back again safely. It isn’t boating is nothing goes awry, but only a couple of minor anchors dragged, a grounding and one tow were reported.

With some boats leaving Sunday and others Monday, an executive decision was made to have TWO parties.  Nobody can say NSA doesn’t think fast on its feet when presented with a logistics challenge!  The beer, wine and food were, as always, fantastic.

Thank you everyone that helped the cruise commodore and his admiral, Pat.  Special shout out to Chuck and Sharon aboard Pelikan, and Chip and Honey aboard Sound Wave for bringing libations from Oriental.  And to those that jumped in last minute to help with shade, tables, etc. What a wonderful club and members we have!

Here are a few photos from the cruise for your enjoyment!

Weeklong Cruises

By the time you read this, the simultaneous weeklong cruises will be under way or shortly so. 12 boats are headed north to Ocracoke, Manteo and Belhaven and 14 boats are headed south to Cape Lookout, Wrightsville Beach, Bald Head and Swansboro.

A big thank you to Robert and Tracy aboard Solveig our cruise captains for the North Cruise!

We pray the wind and weather gods will look over both fleets!

Membership

Welcome New Members!

As the NSA’s sailing season swings into full gear, we have several new members who have joined the club in the past month. Please welcome Ed and Lee Duer of Oriental, with M/V Manana at their home dock, and Steve Anderson and Cari Autry of Greenville, with S/V Imagine at Pecan Grove Marina. Be sure to introduce yourself when you see them at upcoming events!

If you have friends or neighbors who might enjoy being NSA members, be sure to invite them. There remains a full agenda of events all the way into November this year. And if any current members need a new burgee, please let me know – we have plenty available for $25 apiece.

Look forward to seeing you on the water!

Dinghy Poker Run

The Dinghy Poker Run is scheduled for July 27 at the Oriental Marina & Tiki Bar. Hands will go on sale at 0930 and the run will start at 1100 with stops at 7 docks up Smith & Green Creeks; however, poker hands can also be drawn at the Tiki Bar. We will serve food starting at 1230. There will be silent & live auctions & raffle items. This year the DPR is being organized under the NCO (Nautical Co-op of Oriental), the affiliation of all 3 sailing clubs in Oriental. In support of sailing, we have chosen to give the money raised to the Pamlico Coastal Activity Council, earmarked for sailing lessons for less advantaged Pamlico County youth.

We are hoping all of you will come out for this fun event and support our efforts by buying poker hands and auction items. Remember this is an event for the community, so invite your dock neighbors, your out of town friends & family (great fun for the grandkid s!), etc.

We are also looking for your help before and on the day of the event. First, we need items to use for prizes for winning hands and items to use in the silent and live auctions. These can be actual items or gift certificates to specific places or for services or adventures.

Volunteers needed for the event:

Advertising – will need to help place posters around town & in the county. And if anyone has a talent for poster design that help would be greatly appreciated.

Set up – 0800 July 27, organize tables for hand & raffle sales & food, place auction items, etc

Poker hand & raffle ticket sales – starts at 0930. Since we have the option for land hands we will continue selling hands & raffle tickets until 1:30. We need volunteers to cover 0930 – 1130 & 1130 – 1330 time slots.

Food management – The exact menu has not been finalized, but we will need some help with set up & overseeing the serving.

Hand dealers – These are the folks at each dock who manage the drawing of cards when participants arrive. It’s good to have 2 people at each dock. Land hand dealers also needed.

Tally hands – will need to collect the hands & determine the highest hands

Silent auction oversight – Folks needed to pick up bid sheets & record the winners.

Oversight of prizes for winning hands – help keep prize giving moving

Helpers for live auction – show the item being auctioned, help auctioneer keep up with bidders, record winning bidder

Payment processor – help with collection of payments for auction items

Clean up – self explanatory! We hope to be finished by 1530

Contact me with any donations or to volunteer for any of these positions. You can also volunteer for “put me where you need me” if you want to help but don’t have a specific thing you want to do. Call or text: 919-414-7719 or email: srstephenson1420@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

There is still lots of room for volunteers, especially for the day of the event. More specific details will be forthcoming. And, of course, anyone who would like to help in the preparation phase is welcome. Just let me know – srstephenson1420@gmail.com or 919-414-7719.

NSA Merchandise and Social Media

We have a new supply of men’s and women’s t-shirts, as well as koozies, available to purchase. The t-shirts are $20 each and the koozies are one for $3.00 or two for $5.00. Also coming very soon will be caps and visors, which are on order. Contact me at kkennyunc@aol.com if you would like to make a purchase and I’ll make it happen! I’ll also have the merchandise in Oriental on various week-ends and I’ll announce beforehand when that will be.

On another note, for those that may not know, the Neuse Sailing Association is on Facebook & Twitter. The Facebook group is a closed group and approved only for paid members of the NSA. I encourage everyone to post and share your photos with our Facebook group as well as on our website.

I look forward to seeing you and your new t-shirts, caps, visors and koozies on the water and about town!
