Ronnie Simpson is a 38 year old professional sailor and Iraq war veteran originally from Atlanta, GA. He is currently based in Beaufort, North Carolina to prepare for the 2023-4 Global Solo Challenge race; a solo non-stop around the world*sailing race. His boat,*Sparrow, is an Open 50 class of racing sailboat originally built in Australia. It has raced twice around the world and been around Cape Horn three times - all single handed. After being stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, Ronnie was wounded in combat in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004 and eventually medically retired. He turned to sailing after his injuries and has gone on to sail more than 130,000 offshore miles including 19 crossings between the US west coast and Hawaii. He has been working to introducing veterans to sailing for more than a decade and is proud to be partnered with US Patriot Sailing (501(c) (3)) while he prepares to race around the world.
