SPRINGTIME – NSA TIME!!!!!

Springtime and hopefully the cold, wet and pollen are gone! We stayed busy in April with the Boat Show and the Spring Cruise. Thanks to Vice Commodore of Membership Donna Ryder and all her volunteers for representing NSA at the Show. We had a successful weekend recruiting several new members! The Spring Cruise lead by Steve Noe and Lynn Scott was a huge success!! There were 10/12 boats that went to South River and from all reports had a GREAT time! I believe this is the type of close to home event that can be done again and if so I will not miss it!! Thanks Steve and Lynn!

May began with the NSA Anniversary Race which was well attended. Congratulations to the S/V Narnia and Captain Laurie Sampson for now being a 2 time winner of the race! The social was held at the Red Rooster with music by George Bailey (who crewed on Narnia) , pizza and drinks! We were honored by the presence of Andy Denmark who crewed on Narnia and is a founding Father of the NSA! The club was formed in Andy's living room 45 years ago! Thanks to Andy and his friends for laying the foundation for all the fun we have today! Thanks to Hope and Michael Byles for organizing the race and social for the past 3 years! We appreciate Michael committing to a 4th year!

Our next event is the Memorial Day Cruise to Ocracoke and from the response it will be NSA TIME in Ocracoke! We presently have 38 vessels and 70+ people registered for the weekend and I expect that number to grow. If you are planning to come that weekend, please register and sign up for the Forum so that you will receive all the communications about the Cruise. Please fly you NSA burgee so the people of Ocracoke will know we are there!

As we head into our Cruising schedule please try to support these events. Your Vice Commodores of Cruising Pat and Jeff and their Cruise Captains work very hard to organize these events. Their reward for the time they put in is your participation. Another event that can always use volunteers is the Dinghy Poker Run. This has become a large event that raises money for local charities so please be willing to help out our leader Alice Petree in July.

The NSA is 45 years old and growing! Why? Because of you, the members, and those who have chosen to volunteer to help and those who given their time in leadership roles! If you are already a member--thanks!--and if you would like to assure the future of the NSA and become more involved please contact me. I want to thank this year’s Bridge and Directors for their support and contribution to making this a great year! Look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Cruising Outlook

Cruising Outlook

A Great Time at the Spring Cruise!

The wind was blowin’ perfectly for NSA’s first cruise of the year toSouth River.  A big THANK YOU to Steve Noe and Lynn Scott for hosting such a great event! From Sangria to Pain Killers to Margaritas everyone reported having a great time.

Upcoming Cruises

Next up is the Memorial Day cruise to Ocracoke. With over 35 boats registered, this is sure to be a “cruise to remember”!  Captains Chuck and Buster are planning a get-together at the Anchorage Inn Marina – we hope to see you there!

While not an NSA event, the weekend of June 8-10 is the Hope Regalais being held at River Dunes.  As always, it is sure to be a fun time and of course a very worthy cause in Pamlico County.

The Week Long is also turning out to be popular, with 20 boats registered.  The Albemarle loop will never be the same!  Registration closed at the end of April to get boat information to the marinas, but if you missed out, please contact vccruising@neusesailingassociation.organd we will see what accommodations can be made or backfill any cancellations that may happen.

A little further out, be on the lookout for the announcement for the Dog Days Cruise to Belhaven the weekend of July 7th.

Finally – a reminder that the schedule of events is the best place to confirm cruise dates and locations, available on the website here.

NSA Spring Cruise Recap

15 NSA sailing vessels enjoyed a light wind day to reach South River on Saturday, April 28, the first cruise of the 2018 sailing season. The plan to boat-hop instead of rafting up was great fun and a cozy way to get to meet new and old NSA members.

A special thanks to the three boats who volunteered to be our hosts for the afternoon. Many stopped by Serenity (Lynn Scott and Steve Noe) to enjoy some sangria before zipping over to Captiva for a margarita, shaken with style by Donna and Carl Crothers. Captiva’s dropped transom made for the perfect dinghy dock. Most everyone finished up with sun downers on Blue Mind. Hosts Grace, Becky and Paul Griffin served up tasty pain killers. Some hearty souls lingered long enough to play a quick game of cards, managing to keep a little of our humanity intact. Their catamaran was a perfect platform to enjoy a moonrise over anchored NSA sailing vessels before saying good night.

Even with the best laid (and communicated) plans, provided by CruiseCaptain Steve Noe, Mother Nature did not fully cooperate. By 4 AM Sunday, things were kicking up. We pulled up our anchor by 6:30 AM and headed out onto the river. We watched Aphrodisiac try to jump the waves, but that didn’t seem to work any better for them than us. Oh, how I wish I would have had a GoPro that morning to capture the excitement as waves crashed into our dodger. Still, even with rough seas, all who weathered the return to their home port held onto the glow of a cruise well spent with sailing friends. More pictures from the cruise are posted here

The 2018 Anniversary “Race” was a great success!

The weather was perfect - 10 to 14 knots of wind plenty of sunshine and NSA sailors ready to go sailing.

The course was a simple one (oriental #1 to Garbon [spelling] two laps. Each boat was required to perform two 360s, one on an outbound and one on an inbound leg.  All but one boat completed the 360s but  compromised when they had to do an involuntary 720 - all well that ends well.

The winning boat was Narnia Sailed by Laurie Sampson with George Bailey and Andrew Denmark as crew.

Seven boats competed and the post Race comments were very positive - everyone enjoyed the format and looking forward to next years “Race”.

A special thanks to George Bailey for entertaining us at the After “Race” Party. Pictures from the event can be found here.

Also Chris and the staff at the Red Rooster did a great job: The Pizzas were hot and delicious and the beer and wine was cold.

Cold Weather Still Brings New Members to the Boat Show

The Oriental Boat Show felt a little different this year, perhaps a little smaller or maybe spread out more.  The weather certainly challenged us and as sailors we weathered the wind and rain; oh and chilly temperatures as well!  We had a busy day on Saturday with three new members joining our Sailing Association.  Many others stopped to chat and took one of our great brochures with them.  There were a few members who stopped by to renew and reconnect with other members.  We left a little early on Saturday since the weather turned just a bit too windy and rainy.  Sunday was a repeat of Saturday.  A huge thank you to all who helped staff the booth especially our Commodore Chuck Gordon and past Commodore Sharon Stephenson, Alice Petree and Tom McElroy, Tracy Vail, Brian Lamb, John Messer and Pat Thomaier, David Talbot, and to Skip Hulland.

We could not have done it without your help and to those who stopped by to cheer us on and offered conversation you were the encouragement we needed to persevere.

Please help us welcome our new members:  Dan & Amy Tankersley as  Yacht members on “The Knoxville Girl” she’ll be heading to River Dunes; Alasdair & Pam McGregor, as Yacht members on “Duende” at Pecan Grove Marina; A. Truett and Cindy Ray as Yacht members sailing on “Bon Temps” at Pecan Grove Marina.  Please introduce yourself and welcome them sharing news about the coming events and cruising schedule.

If any new member has not yet received their Welcome Burgee, please contact me at vcmembership@neusesailingassociation.org.   If anyone wants to replace a weathered burgee, I have a few available at $25.00.  Just let me know and we’ll get it in the mail in time for our sailing season.

We also have some exciting news, Outland Hatch Covers has offered the following to our members and to any new members:

Our offer is for the NSA to have a gift for newly signed members as well as a reward for current members.

*As an incentive to sign up with the NSA, new members will receive a 25% discount for Outland Hatch Covers. This is an offer you may extend to your newly signed members over the next 6 months.  The offer expires on October 15th this year.

**We don't want to leave anyone out so we will offer your current members 25% off Outland Hatch Covers as well but they need to order soon as this offer will expire in 6 weeks or by end of May this year.”

This has been posted at the website along with the other benefits for members.   If you know someone who has been on the fence while considering joining the best sailing association in NC, tell them about this opportunity.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day Cruise

It will not be long before the NSA heads for Ocracoke and Silver Lake. We have 38 vessels and 70+ people registered for the weekend. If youhave not registered please do so and sign up for the Memorial Day forum. The forum will be our tool for communicating with the fleet. As the time for departure nears we will talk about who is leaving when, weather and other topics. The Social will be held in the Gazebo at Anchorage Inn and Marina beginning at 4PM on Saturday. Please bring an appetizer to share and the Club will provide beer and wine. I suggest if you are a wine drinker you might want to bring your boat safe wine glass. If you have any questions please contact me. Looking forward to a great cruise and please fly you NSA burgee!

Misto

Misto Is On the Move Again At Last!

After a stay of nearly 8 months in New Zealand we are at last on the move back to Fiji. We have enjoyed our time here in the Antipodes, including a memorable 7 week trip to Australia. There we travelled the coast road from Sydney to Melbourne, enjoyed the delights of Tasmania in a camper van which we took back to Adelaide where we boarded the luxurious Ghan train. We stopped in Alice Springs for a week to visit the famous Red Center including spectacular Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon, before ending in Darwin and the Kakadu National Park with its huge crocodiles. It has ticked several things off our “bucket list”!

Now, after a rather extended period on the hard to complete some electronics upgrades and other less glamorous maintenance jobs, it’s a return to the cruising life. We will pick up our crew, Mick and Helen friends from the 2017 WARC, in Fiji and then head to Vanuatu. We plan to meet up with the 2018 WARC there in Port Vila.

We are thinking fondly of Memorial Day in Ocracoke and will miss being there with you, so we wish you all a wonderful NSA event. For newcomers to NSA we recommend the cruise as being possibly the best event of the year so don’t miss it!

Regards

Ros and Howard
